    The FORCE: A highly portable parallel programming language

    Here, it is explained why the FORCE parallel programming language is easily portable among six different shared-memory microprocessors, and how a two-level macro preprocessor makes it possible to hide low level machine dependencies and to build machine-independent high level constructs on top of them. These FORCE constructs make it possible to write portable parallel programs largely independent of the number of processes and the specific shared memory multiprocessor executing them

    Using augmented reality for shopping : a framework for AR induced consumer behavior, literature review and future agenda

    Purpose A current technological trend, which has gained even more traction recently due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is the use of augmented reality (AR) in shopping environments. AR is addressing contemporary challenges rooted in online shopping (e.g. in terms of experientiality and try-on) and is fundamentally reshaping consumers' experiences. The purpose of this study is to provide a synthesized and structured overview of the state-of-the-art research focused on AR shopping. Design/methodology/approach The authors conduct a systematic literature review of the empirical academic corpus focused on shopping via AR technology. Findings The review reveals the diverse psychological (cognitive, affective, and social) as well as behavioral outcomes related to the use of AR in the shopping context. The authors integrate the results into a framework for AR induced consumer behavior in shopping, thereby providing an important overview of the dynamics in AR-related shopping and the factors influencing the adoption of the technology by consumers. Specifically, the authors encountered that the technological abilities of AR (e.g. in terms of interactivity, vividness, informativeness, etc.) are a source for enhanced utilitarian and hedonic shopping experiences that can support intentions to purchase a product, reuse an AR app, or recommend it to others. Importantly, our review reveals the demand for several avenues for future research. Originality/value The authors provide an overview and synthesis of how and where AR is employed in shopping contexts, what theories and technological characteristics of AR are commonly analyzed, and what psychological and behavioral outcomes AR has been found to evoke. Based on our findings, the authors derive a framework that illustrates the dynamics in AR shopping and give an in-depth discourse on 13 future research agenda points related to thematic, theoretical, methodological, and technological matters.©2022 Emerald Publishing Limited.     INPRES (intraoperative presentation of surgical planning and simulation results) – augmented reality for craniofacial surgery

    In this paper we present recent developments and pre-clinical validation results of our approach for augmented reality (AR, for short) in craniofacial surgery. A commercial Sony Glasstron display is used for optical see-through overlay of surgical planning and simulation results with a patient inside the operation room (OR). For the tracking of the glasses, of the patient and of various medical instruments an NDI Polaris system is used as standard solution. A complementary inside-out navigation approach has been realized with a panoramic camera. This device is mounted on the head of the surgeon for tracking of fiducials placed on the walls of the OR. Further tasks described include the calibration of the head-mounted display (HMD), the registration of virtual objects with the real world and the detection of occlusions in the object overlay with help of two miniature CCD cameras. The evaluation of our work took place in the laboratory environment and showed promising results. Future work will concentrate on the optimization of the technical features of the prototype and on the development of a system for everyday clinical use

    Ultrafast dynamics of hot charge carriers in an oxide semiconductor probed by femtosecond spectroscopic ellipsometry

    Many linked processes occur concurrently in strongly excited semiconductors, such as interband and intraband absorption, scattering of electrons and holes by the heated lattice, Pauli blocking, bandgap renormalization and the formation of Mahan excitons. In this work, we disentangle their dynamics and contributions to the optical response of a ZnO thin film. Using broadband pump-probe ellipsometry, we can directly and unambiguously obtain the real and imaginary part of the transient dielectric function which we compare with first-principles simulations. We find interband and excitonic absorption partially blocked and screened by the photo-excited electron occupation of the conduction band and hole occupation of the valence band (absorption bleaching). Exciton absorption turns spectrally narrower upon pumping and sustains the Mott transition, indicating Mahan excitons. Simultaneously, intra-valence-band transitions occur at sub-picosecond time scales after holes scatter to the edge of the Brillouin zone. Our results pave new ways for the understanding of non-equilibrium charge-carrier dynamics in materials by reliably distinguishing between changes in absorption coefficient and refractive index, thereby separating competing processes.     Diagnostic impact of additional O-(2-[18F]fluoroethyl)-L-tyrosine (F-18-FET) PET following immunotherapy with dendritic cell vaccination in glioblastoma patients

    Objective: Vaccination therapy using tumour antigen-loaded, autologous dendritic cells (DC) is a promising therapeutic approach alongside standard treatment for glioblastoma (GBM). However, reliable diagnostic criteria regarding therapy monitoring are not established. Here, we analysed the impact of additional F-18-fluoroethyl-tyrosine positron emission tomography (F-18-FET PET) imaging following DC vaccination therapy. Methods: We analysed data of GBM patients who received DC vaccination therapy. Following MRI diagnosis of tumour recurrence, additional static and dynamic F-18-FET PET imaging was performed. Vaccination was performed five times by intradermal injections, either weekly between concomitant radio/-chemotherapy and intermittent chemotherapy or after tumour recurrence, before re-radiation therapy. MRI and F-18-FET PET results were compared and correlated with clinical data. Results: Between 2003 and 2016, 5 patients were identified who received DC vaccination and F-18-FET PET imaging (1 female/4 males; mean age: 44 +/- 14 y). 3/5 patients showed congruent results of tumour progression. In three patients F-18-FET PET indicated treatment related changes, which was in contrast to MRI findings that indicated tumour progression. In these patients F-18-FET PET results could be confirmed by either neuropathological diagnosis or according to the RANO criteria Conclusions: Despite the small patients number our results indicate an additional impact of F-18-FET PET for monitoring outcome following vaccination therapy

    DESY is planning the upgrade of PETRA III to a fourth generation light source, providing high brightness, quasi diffraction limited hard X-ray photons. The project is underpinned by the construction of a new storage ring PETRA IV, based on a 20 pm accelerator lattice using a hybrid 6-bend achromat concept. We review here the status of the machine project, the latest development in the different technical subsystems, the status of the engineering integration and the plans for the implementation of the new ring in the existing PETRA III tunnel

    Smoking and lymphoma risk in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition

    Lymphomas are one of the few cancers that have been increasing in incidence over the past decades. So far, only a few established risk factors have been identified, including immunosuppression and viral infections. Recent evidence suggests etiologic heterogeneity of different lymphoma subtypes. Smoking may affect risk differently, depending on the lymphoma entity. The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition was used to study the role of smoking in the etiology of lymphomas and individual subtypes within a prospective study. Information on baseline and lifetime tobacco smoking by 478,590 participants was collected between 1992 and 2000. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to calculate multivariate-adjusted hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals. During 3,567,410 person-years of follow-up, 1,371 lymphoma cases (1,304 non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and 67 Hodgkin's lymphomas) were identified. Relative risk for smokers at recruitment was more than twofold higher for Hodgkin's lymphoma (hazard ratio = 2.14, 95% confidence interval: 1.18, 3.87) but was not elevated for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (hazard ratio = 1.06, 95% confidence interval: 0.94, 1.19) and individual B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma subtypes. In this prospective study, smoking appeared to increase Hodgkin's lymphoma risk consistently in both genders, whereas B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma risk was not associated. Future analysis should involve viral biomarkers and genetic susceptibility markers to elucidate potential mechanisms of smoking-induced carcinogenesis, particularly for Hodgkin's lymphoma

    Search for narrow resonances using the dijet mass spectrum in pp collisions at s√=8  TeV

    Results are presented of a search for the production of new particles decaying to pairs of partons (quarks, antiquarks, or gluons), in the dijet mass spectrum in proton-proton collisions at s√=8  TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.0  fb−1, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2012. No significant evidence for narrow resonance production is observed. Upper limits are set at the 95% confidence level on the production cross section of hypothetical new particles decaying to quark-quark, quark-gluon, or gluon-gluon final states. These limits are then translated into lower limits on the masses of new resonances in specific scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. The limits reach up to 4.8 TeV, depending on the model, and extend previous exclusions from similar searches performed at lower collision energies. For the first time mass limits are set for the Randall–Sundrum graviton model in the dijet channel
